The castle is thought to date back to the 10th century.
The keep of this castle is probably the origin of the name La Mastre, which is believed to come from the Latin magistra, meaning “master tower” or “main tower.”
Built on a rocky spur, it overlooked the upper town of La Mastre to the south. Over time, the stones from the ruined houses were reused to build the houses of the lower town, which is today’s Lamastre.
